Travelling on PIA from Karachi - Dubai - Karachi. Its not the airline, its the people who travel make the difference.

In february 2014, I happened to travel to Dubai from Karachi.

This time around, I had to choose to fly from Pakistan International Airline (PIA)
The journey from Karachi to Dubai was pretty fine. The flight was on time, the service was fine, some what similar as you would expect from PIA.

AS soon as the Karachi to Dubai flight landed in Dubai, you could expect the urgency in the people to get to the gate of the aircraft and get out of it at the soonest. We see this sort of action in almost all sort of pakistan flights, where people want to get out of the plane at the soonest.

While this act can be highly foolish. AS dubai airport is pretty big, and it takes almost 20 - 40 mins to reach to the baggage claim, that is also after passing thru immigration, and not to forget the long walk towards the immigration counters.

Dubai airport is not a small airport as karachi airport where you could reach the immigration and baggage claim counter with in 10 mins.

This was the only hicup in the dubai bound flight.
The main action started in the Dubai to Karachi flight.

Dubai to Karachi on PIA Flight

The main action was on dubai to karachi flight.
Since karachi airport is a small airport and if you show some running skills and urgency you can reach the immigration counters and baggage claim area with in 10 minutes of getting out of plane.

This is the reason, many pakistanis when travelling to pakistan tend to carry small handbags, rather than a big suitcase so they can take the handbag in the airplane as cabin baggage and can swift thru the immigration process and come out at the soonest.

I noticed lots of people carrying handbags, some of them even carrying 3 handbags, and lots of them were over sized.

The flight was delayed, as it did not arrive from pakistan, so we had to wait a long while for the flight.

While we were waiting, the PIA staff came and asked several people to have their handbags tagged so it will go in the luggage and not in the cabin baggage. This caused a lot of argument between people and the PIA staff as almost everyone of them wanted to take cabing baggage and not give it in the luggage.

Everyone claiming that the bag has some important documents, or fragile stuff etc.

While all this was going on , the flight from pakistan arrived, which was about 4 hours late.
When boarding the plane the airhostess once again requested people to give their handbags in the luggage and not to take it in the cabin as the cabin baggage compartments are all full and have no place.

This again caused lots of arguments, some people even telling that they will keep the bag in their laps as they cannot give the baggage in luggage due to the same reason: it has fragile items, it has some important documents.

Soon the tunnel leading to the aircraft was giving a look of a local Karachi W11 bus, where everyone had some sort of extra size baggage and did not want to give it in the luggage.

The airhostess, who was from Czech republic, as the planes were operated by PIA under a lease agreement from czech, gave up on the argument and let the people take their baggage in.

When people when in, it was another fuss.
All the baggage compartments were full and there was no place to keep the hang baggage. Some people argued that the compartment above their seat is tobe used for their baggage only and not by any other.

So they started removing the baggage from the compartment above their seats, and started placing their own.
This caused another mayhem and argument and heated exchange of words.

It took some good while for people to stop arguing, settle their baggage, and some voluntarily let their hand baggage to be taken to the luggage compartment.

The flight took off. MAny people were happy that they get to keep their handbags with them, so once they arrive at karachi airport, they will just zip thru the immigration and go out of the airport.

During the flight

The airhostess started to serve refreshments. She was half way thru the plane, when a person sitting in the front seats came up to her and asked for some thing. The coversation continued for some two minutes.
The airhostess seemingly refused the person some thing, and he was not happy with it.

So he walked back to his seat, and threw a napkin in her direction which was meant to hit her.
However, it missed her and the napkin landed on another passengers lap.

This caused another argument in the plane, which was short lived, but yet shows our mentality and our behaviour.

Landing

The flight landed finally at dawn in karachi. As soon as the flight landed, people started to stand up and make ques so they can get out of the plane at the soonest. Everyone seemed to be in a hurry to reach his destination.

The opening of the plane door, took a bit more than longer and the people started shouting "challo , kholo ..challo" ( hurry up , open the door, hurry up)

Some one's baggage was bumped in another passenger, and this again caused an argument .

Finally the door openend, and people hurried out of the plane and some of them ran past each other to make it to the immigration counter at the soonest.

Once the immigration was done, we had to go to the baggage claim section.
It took a long while for the baggage to arrive and we had to wait some 30 - 40 minutes for the baggage belt to start and I could see that same people who were showing a lot of hurry in the airplane and not giving their handbags were standing , waiting for the baggage.

The baggage belt started in some 40 mins and finally the luggage arrive and people started making way out of the airport main building.

This attitude of our people puts a lot of question mark.
- Is it really worth to argue so much , just for the same of argument ?
- is it really worth showing so much urgency, when you know it will take time in immigration and baggage claim and you have nothing to do and no where to go unless the baggage arrives

This brings me to the conclusion - May be the airline is not the prime airline, but the people travelling in it are not much sane.

maulana tariq jameel bayan at bait us salam masjid, karachi on friday 21st March 2014

I received a message about maualan tariq jameel bayan at our neighbouring bait us salam masjid.
I confirmed with a few of my friends who are in tableeghi work and thought of attending the bayan (religious lecture).

I have heard a lot about him, and have seen and heard a lot of his bayan but never seen him live.

So As expected I reached at the mosque by 12:00 pm while jumma time was 1:30 pm but the mosque was almost jam packed with lots of people still coming in herds and flocks.

The bayan finally started at 12:30 which was majorly covering pakistan's matters, way of our business and life and that we should give some time to tableegh.

The over all bayan was good and the dua after jumma prayers was one of the best i have seen in a long time.
I havent seen so many people in a jumma prayer, except for median and makkah.

There were people all around , in the mosques, basements, roofs, roads, sidelanes and any possible area where they can hear the bayan.

The dua after the jumma prayers was fine and many people were heard crying when they were making the dua.
The last time i saw so many people crying in a dua was perhaps back in 1991- 1992 in ramzan at 27th shab , at a khatm-e-taraveeh.

All was fine, however when i came out of masjid I saw people have parked their cars, bikes and rickshah in haphazzar manner, blocking lanes, streets and gates of the houses.

People were restless and honking and were not giving way to each other to pass -

Just a few moments back people were looking at peace, but as soon as they got out of the mosque, there was chaos like situation where everyone was looking to reach home first.

While not taking any thing away from the bayan, we perhaps need to work a lot on ethic and civic sense.

Breaking News Pakistan - Culture

Our newschannels try to give news worthiness to every news in Pakistan ,be it small or big.
We can see that every channel flashes breaking news with red ticker, whatever the occassion or whatever the news may be.

The breaking news culture is having adverse affect on the people, who are made to believe that every thing bad is happening in pakistan.

I suggest to PTA to control the culture of breaking news in Pakistan. Every channel should have a quota of 5 RED tickers / breaking news per day - so they start to know how, where and when to use the red ticker.

PTA should allot 5 red tickers per day per news channel and monitor its usage.

what medicines to pack when travelling - emergency travel medicines

Often when travelling we often ask ourself the question, what medicines should we pack when travelling - what should be medicine for children or infants and what medicines to pack for adults.

When travelling you can incur any type of illness and that is the worst nightmare of any anytrip - getting ill.

What is more important is to have medicines handy for any situation.
Here are some of the medicines which may be handy when travelling -
these may take a bit of space in your suitcase or bag but is worth having them with you.

- pain killers like panadol / paracetamol
- antiseptic / antibiotic cream like POLYFAX
- Anti allergy (Myteka)
- Eye / nose / ear drops
- Oral ointment for treatment of oral cuts (eg: Somogel)
- Eye ointment - for eye related infections (Like Polyfax eye ointment)
- generic antibiotic (eg: amoxil)
- Pain relief balm (eg: iodex / tiger balm)
- first aid aerosol / bandage
- for upset stomach / loose motion (eg lomotil or antox)
- for flu (Arinac)
- for extreme pain / teeth ache or other extreme pains (ANSAID)

Most of these medicines are available over the counter and do not need prescription , except for antibiotics. Better check with your pharmacy.

Need for Broadcasting Content Complaints Council of Pakistan

As I watch some foreign tv channel, often i see a slide which says that"if you have any complain regarding the content of this program, you may report to Indian Broadcast foundation or Broadcast content complain council of India"

As per the current scenario of Pakistan, this was interesting as often people have complains about tv programs.
I visited the website of Indian broadcasting foundation (http://ibfindia.com) and feel that pakistan media can copy a similar model where a Broadcasting Content Complaint Council can be created with the retired supreme court judge as its head and other members of the council may comprise eminent persons, heads of tv channels and others from national assembly committees for children, women, minorities, religion, provinces and so on.

This can be sub divided for entertainment channels, news channels, advertisement and children.

Anyone having any objection on the content of the program may launch a complain and the complaint council will address it.
Indian Broadcasting content complaint council can be good role model for Pakistan's media, where the load of supreme court will also be cut down where they can refer such complaints against channels to their respective council and people will be able to put their timely input about the program and can improve the quality of the electronic media in Pakistan.

Working procedure of civic agencies in karachi -cdgk / kmc

Ever since my childhood, I have seen a set pattern of performance of our metropolitan corporation and more actively around rainy season.

1. A road or street or bi-lane will remain dug up or broken for ages. So much so that the area people would have given up hope that it would ever by carpeted again.

2. Then finally one day out of no where, and more specifically around monsoon season, kmc people would show up and start carpeting the road. The area people rejoice that finally their road is being carpeted.

3. Just after a few weeks of the carpeting of the road, some utility company like ptcl, kesc, kwsb or others will show up at the site and will dig up the road again to do their bit.

4. And then we are taken back to step one.

5. Even if the utility company do not dig up the road, the road would falter again during the monsoon rain.

If our utility and metropolitan companies would have co-ordinated in an effecient manner, I am sure many such expenses could have been avoided.

As for me I am still waiting to see a road which has been carpeted and is not dug up again with in one year of its being carpeted.

Performance of Pakistan in London Olympics 2012

We are nation where street crime, mugging, target killing is rampant and still we failed to produce shooters who can represent pakistan in the Olympics 2012.

Our streets majorly witness protests with burning effigies and pelting stones 'pathrao' at people and property and still we were unable to produce discus throwers who can make it to represent Pakistan in the Olympics.

We are a nation who is always ready to put a fight for the pettiest of issues and yet we were not able to find quality wrestlers and karate players for the event.

More so, everyday we commute from home to work in public transport, hanging and clutching to every minimum space that is made available in the shabby public transport, at time sprinting behind the bus to catch it, and yet we weren't able to send enough athletes to the event.

Pakistan's Olympic contingent is one of the smallest in the event. Countries like Kenya and Iran had more representation in the game and have been able to win medals. Even country like Tunisia which was recently stuck by rebel was able to send more athletes.

With so much talent available on the streets of Pakistan, it would have been wiser if that talent is used in more productive activities.

Karachi factory fire

Every time an act of terrorism happens, government responds quickly by banning pillion riding.
Similarly, when a major accident happens like the current karachi factory fire, the agencies quickly try to put the name of the owner of the business on exit control list.

All politicians and people demand inquiry and punishment of officials and owners. However this is not a long term solution, as we all know the level of corruption in our government departments and how busineseses try to avoid legalities and refrain frok complying many industry related laws.

We have witnessed eathquakes and flooding and everytime we hear of talks of updating our system but it never happens.

Rather than putting the name of owner on elc or claiming to punish officials  involved we really need to address the issue, educate people, employers and employees about civil defence and fire fightinging trainings.
